Lesson 7 blog

I am not an expert when it comes to powerpoint presentations but having to download the microsoft office in order to use the powerpoint was interesting. There was many templates in which I could choose from and different colors. Using powerpoint slides gives the presenter an organized presentation of what he/she would like to present to the audience. I feel that it is a much better presentation with powerpoint verus transperancy slides. I am actually going to read up more on powerpoint so that I may successfully present any other assignments that I may have in other classes. There is many different ways that powerpoint can be created. It takes time and patience to get this right.

My experience with wikis was a pretty interesting lesson. It was an experience where I had the chance to edit a lesson without having to type a new lesson. With the use of a wiki, i was able to edit and contribute among a group communication mechansims that could also be edited by the other members of the group. With this lesson I was able to create a wiki for members of my son's t-ball team and give the parents to view and edit any information that they felt would be helpful to the team. We had a list of whow would be bringing snacks and drinks. Some parents would go in and edit the page if they needed to change the snack or drinks. If there was a change of time for practice the coach would edit the original time and post the new time. Overall using the wiki was easier than sending a different email with each change that was done. I do plan to continue using wikis for any type of planning that will be coming up, whether it be a trip or just a list of things to do. I am grateful that Wiki's were introduced in this lesson and now my life can be a little easier. Technology is awesome.

Lesson 5 Wikis

First of all, I didn't know that a Wiki existed. After looking at the websites that were available I understand what a Wiki is. The youtube presentation explained what a wiki was. All I can say is that it seems to work better than emails when it comes to coordinating an event. I knew there was wikipedia, but didn't realize that it could be edited. It does say that wikipedia is on of the best wiki's out there, but if people can go in an edit the information, it makes me wonder how accurate it really is. When doing a research paper, wikipedia might not be the best source. I do know that my children's teachers do not allow the use of wikipedia just because of the feature to edit.

The interesting information I learned about wiki's is that a wiki is a website that can be created wehre users can add, remove and edit every page using a web browser. This is becoming knowns as the tool choice for large, multiple-participant projects. Other educational uses of wikis come in the form that lesson plans can be developed by using a wiki. Counselors and teachers can help support a student in their college process by posting college sites. I do like the educational wiki's where the teacher can post their assignments and if there is an update, then the teacher can edit the assignment.

After reading and understanding this information I plan to create a wiki and send it to my family, so this way we can plan any upcoming event and if there are any changes, then any of my family members can go in and edit and if more changes need to be done or if another link needs to be added then it can be done through the wiki.

LESSON 4

http://www.pbs.org./parents/childrenandmedia

In this website it talks about the different age groups in which children view games. Depending on the age will vary on how children will view gmes. Also the age will also determine whether a games is inappropriate or appropriate. Parents need to ask questions about the video game. Getting involved is key to control what your child plays. Limiting how much time is crucial. One thing I have learned is not to let a preschooler play games that are rated mature or teen. These games are to advanced and can have mature scences or language. Most games can be educational and can help a child with hand and eye coordination.

http://www.kidscource.com/kidscource/content2/video.games.html

According to this website it stresses that the content of video games may influence how children's attitude are geared toward gender roles. There are males who play more games than female. Children who play violent games tend to have an aggressive behavior later in life. They sometimes want to believe that they can act out the game. Video games tend to lack physical activity in children. To much time spent on video games can cause epileptic seizures and can cause heart and blood pressure to change.

http://www.childdevelopmentinfo.com/health_saftey/video_games_and_children.shtml

This website also talks about how to much violence in games is not good for children. Children might have trouble with reality versus fantasy. Parents need to be involved and monitor what their children play and how long they play. With more parent involvement children will understand the concept. The new system the Wii allows a child to be more physically involved in the game since they are using their hands and sometimes their whole body. I have a Wii and my children are actually getting a workout when they play "SuperMario Brothers Olympics"

Are video games good or bad? Video games can be both depending on which games are played and if it gears towards their ages.
Can this be an either/or question or is it some of both?
Yes this can be either or since depending on how parents view this, parents will have questions on how this affects their children.
What should educators and parents look for in games?
As educators and parents ratings and content should be reviewed before a child plays a game. If more parents would be involved then this would be controlled.

LESSON 4

http://familyinternet.about.com/od/introfamilycomputing/a/choosekidssoftw.htm

In this website it talks about how video games can have an educational component or involve open-ended creative play. Fine motor skills is something that a child can learn because on the mouse you have to either right click or left click. To much exposure to violence is some games can embed in a childs brain since it is still forming. Minimal to no violence is better. The only bad thing is that children are not only exposed to violence on video gmes but television as well.

Lesson 3 Technology

Technology is wonderful. I simply love my laptop and digital camera. My laptop is accessible where i can take it from room to room and not be sitting at the computer desk. When my children are doing their homework or looking at their myspace, I know that I am able to do my homework. If I have to go somewhere, I can take my laptop and hope I can get a good wireless signal and read my email or whatever I have to do.

As for my digital camera, its a great piece of technology. You can just take pictures and dowload the memory card instead of having to take the film and have it developed. I remember having to do that with my camera where I had to load the film. I am able to download my pictures right to my laptop and able to share them through email. Life is so much easier with these two gadgets.

Lesson 2

What I learned from this lesson is that blogs allow me to share in unique ways on how I can share information. It allows me to share things that are on my mind and write about it. Almost as though I was talking to a person face to face. The second thing I learned is that I can share my blog with family or friends. I can talk about an important event that is going to happen or will happen. For example-My emotions going through a deployment.

A blog is also useful for teachers. It can help a teacher to post assignments, review questions and any notes that a student will need for that class. There are some teachers that I know who use blogs to communicate with their students. My child actually uses this tool.

Safety is another item that I learned about. Especially when setting up a blog for students. Just to avoid any unnecessary stress or lurkers. A gated blog will help protect the students from lurkers.
